I have been asked numerous times how to make baby food. I managed to make most all of Lyndie's food while continuing to work almost full time. It was a serious task that I did not take lightly. I cannot imagine working so much less and not making Channing's food. This week alone I have been asked three times by friends, so here we go. This is not my usual blog so sorry family. I am only writing this for Facebook and those who have inquired.
I save tons of money making my food. I think I could make everything organic at one quarter the price you might pay for non-organic Gerber. Today I spent exactly one dollar on two sweet potatoes at Walmart today. I always wash my fruits and veggies with dish soap and a scrubber. Then, I pealed the skins off of my sweet potatoes. To my friends following this as a reference, remember that young babies cannot process the skins of certain veggies and fruits. Please google this to know exactly.
Once peeled, I slice my veggies about a half inch thick so that they steam rapidly. I use a double boiler type of steamer I purchased from Walmart for about $20. Plan on about 10-15 mins to steam.
I also purchased the least expensive food processor ever...(mainly to prove to Daddy that I could make baby foo much cheaper than buying it). It was about $20 as well and has been awesome. The disk blade in the top is set to "shred." Puree as needed. Sweet potatoes are hard to mess up. When shredding meat, please make it creamier with expressed milk.
I make large batches of one type of food. Once thinned properly, I freeze in ice cube trays. Don't skimp on these because you will break the low cost ones. After a few hours, pop em out and move them to a freezer bag. An ice cube comes out to about one ounce. Remove as much air as possible from the bag to preserve freshness.
I label the bags with the date frozen as different foods have different shelf lives in the freezer. No point feeding a food if it has lost its nutritional value.
See? I told you it is very easy and inexpensive. You will be amazed at the colors you produce. I cannot wait till you make green beans and compare them to the Gerber version. Amazing! Please feel free to FB me with questions. Oh and for my one dollar??? 12 servings! You do the math!
